IT’S ADVENTURE TIME! New original art by Mahendra Singh, from The Adventure Time Encylopedia!

Adventure Time Encyclopedia cover - smallWoo-hoo! The Beguiling is thrilled to announce that we are now selling original art pieces by Mahendra Singh, the lead illustrator of The Adventure Time Encyclopedia!

We have 6 pieces available for sale, including all of the illustrations that make up the cover featuring Finn, Jake, and the entire cast! You can see all the pages for sale at:

Mahendra Singh has a very unique illustration style that closely resembles traditional engraving. His beautiful images are created by using dip pens with English or German nibs onto Denril paper, a special type of vellum which never cracks/stretches/warps. The whole page is then treated with Krylon Spray Fix afterwards to further protect it. All of this combines to create a slightly textured, unique, and truly compelling work of original art. SAMURAI JACK IS BACK! The beloved animated series has returned in a new monthly-comic book series written by Toronto’s own Jim Zub, and it’s already drawing rave reviews! In fact, the first issue has already completely sold out and is going to a second printing!

Now, what you might not know is that The Beguiling has commissioned an EXCLUSIVE cover to this first issue, by none other than Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky, available only at our store! Jim Zub will be signing and sketching Samurai Jack #1 and all of his various comics issues on the second floor of The Beguiling from 12pm to 3pm. Jim is also the writer and creator of the series’ Skullkickers and Makeshift Miracle, the writer of the monthly Pathfinder comics series, and recently wrote Shadowman #11, among other works!

Graphic Novel Course Registration

The University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies is offering a graphic novel course this fall, and if you’re looking for an academic approach to writing about–or creating–comics, it might just be for you! Here’s the description:

Using Scott McCloud’s brilliant and visionary Understanding Comics as a guiding text, we will explore what makes the comic book medium so popular and unique. A variety of examples and genres will be studied such as Herge’s Tintin, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, and Alan Moore’s V For Vendetta. The medium of comics possesses magic and masterpieces all of its own; veteran enthusiasts and those desiring to explore a new cultural field are welcome to join us in its study. Work will consist of either analytical writing or creating one’s own comics.

We like the professor Koom Kankesan and this seems like a pretty solid course, all told. Registration is open now!
